Do not use wood. All wood that comes from cutting down trees for this purpose. The alternative is to particleboard. Even if the trees are also in every species of tree and ground and becomes a table. I think it is a good alternative SA. Some trees such as eucalyptus trees grow fast and only takes a few years to mature, whereas for the trees like oaks and the team for many years to mature. Between these two is better with eucalyptus. One can understand that it is almost impossible to use the trees at all. So they use wisely.
The best way is to use recycled wood. Find a hardwood, like it is. Call a local tree service and offer to get a tree to be eliminated. They have not only the removal of the tree for furniture production, practice sustainability and environmental protection.
Bamboo is a rapidly renewable resources firm. Revived quickly, as the U.S. Green Building Council defines itself as follows: agricultural products, fiber and animal, which is growing 10 years or less, or rise up and gather still ongoing and sustainable.
